This is another unique slot from IGT that you can find in land-based casinos and their online counterparts. The twist with this one is that the 5 reels each have 8 rows. There are 100 winning lines, and many of the symbols (the wolves in particular) are 2 to 3 symbols deep. Add to this totem pole (native Indian) type symbols which are 5, 6 or even more symbols deep – and you can see there are a lot of winning possibilities with this game.

Extra-long reels mean that the layout is different to regular slots. You’ll find the reels to the left of your screen, with the controls and options on the right. Graphics are beautifully produced, putting older wolf-based titles (for example Wild Wolf) to shame. There are several colours of wolf on the reels. The soundtrack is also a step up from the earlier games. You get a drum based track, and the distant howl of wolves to add some atmosphere. This music becomes more intense and lively during the bonus round, when the graphics switch to night-time.

There is nothing particularly new in the bonus round; this involves 5 free spins, which you can retrigger. Wolf Rising is all about the game-play from the expanded reels, ‘fancy extras’ not being a big part of this game.

100 win-lines is the default for this game, which covers a lot of the 8 rows of symbols on the 5 reels. You can select the lines you want to play, with 1 being the lowest. Why anyone would choose to play on an 8 row slot with 1 line is a mystery to me. With the full 100 lines (which take full advantage of the stacked wild totem poles) you can spin for a minimum of $1. Totem poles are the top symbol (surprisingly considering the game is themed on wolves). These are wild, substituting for anything bar the bonus symbols. You will get 1000 coins for 5 on a win-line, with 250 coins for 4. There are 4 different wolf symbols in play (each takes up multiple reels). The black and the white wolves are worth 500 coins for 5, while the tan and grey wolves 250. The remaining winning symbols are the playing cards, which are ace down to nine.

With stacked wild totem poles, and the 100 winning lines in play – you can end up with multiple big wins from the standard play. The sound effects add nicely to the atmosphere without ever feeling intrusive.

In contrast, the free spins round was a little disappointing. This is just 5 spins if you do not get a retrigger, and other than the ‘night’ background there is not much to make it interesting. I get that many people prefer a solid playable slot to a fancy interactive one, however for me this game went little too far in the ‘standard’ direction.
